New Prisoner of Conscience, Chen Guangcheng

We are now campaigning for the release of a POC in China. Though released from prison, he is still a prisoner - in his own home: Human rights activist Chen Guangcheng was released from prison on 9 September 2010 after serving his four–year and three month sentence. Upon release, he was escorted back to his home village of Donshigu in Linyi City, Shandong province, where he and his family were immediately placed under heavy surveillance.

Chen Guangcheng lives with his wife Yuan Weijing, their five-year-old daughter and his 76-yearold mother, who all remain under illegal house arrest and are effectively cut away from the rest of the world. Only his elderly mother is allowed to occasionally leave the house and go shopping for groceries. Chen Guangcheng and Yuan Weijing's son is staying with Yuan Weijing's sister in Yinan city so that he can go to school. In fact, according to Chen Guangcheng’s supporters who have tried to visit him since his release, the entire Donshigu village is flooded with police and people seemingly hired by the police to prevent non-resident visitors from entering.

WHARFEDALE AMNESTY will be supporting an event organised by Menston ONE WORLD GROUP, to raise awareness of Belarus prisoner of conscience, ANDREI SANNIKOV. A recent report suggests that former Belarus presidential candidate, Andrei Sannikov, may be close to death after being tortured in jail by the KGB. Sannikov’s wife, Irina, who lives with their young son, is under house arrest, which means that two police officers are present in their house 24/7.

Please support this event, to be held at Cornerstone, at the Methodist Church, Menston, on Thursday 22 March, at 7.30pm. UK based members of Andrai Sannikov’s family will be present, and the One World Group are planning to show a short film about the situation in Belarus.

The group has adopted a new Prisoner of Conscience. Birtukan Mideksa is serving a life sentence after revealing information about the process by which she was pardoned for an earlier charge of treason. Amnesty International believes that she was arrested solely for peacefully exercising her rights to freedom of expression and association.

A lawyer and former leader of the opposition party, Birtukan was originally arrested for her alleged involvement in demonstrations over disputed election results in 2005. She was found guilty of treason, but was pardoned in mid-2007. In November 2008 Birtukan spoke at a meeting in Sweden about the process which led to her release. The government considered her comments a violation of her pardon, but Birtukan refused to retract them. She was re-imprisoned in December 2008.
